Types of Cannabis Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates and extracts come in a variety of different textures, consistencies, and are made with different processes.

The term “live” refers to how the plant was harvested - it means the plant was frozen immediately after harvesting to preserve the natural terpenes found in the plant. The term “cured” means that the flower was harvested, dried, and cured before processing it into an extract.

Live Rosin

Live rosin is produced without the use of chemical-based solvents, and is instead processed with water, ice, and heat. Live rosin is also sometimes called SHO (Solventless Hash Oil).

Live Resin

Live resin is produced with chemical-based solvents like butane (the resulting extract is often referred to as “BHO” - Butane Hash Oil) after freezing the plant before processing it.

Cured Resin

Cured resin is produced with chemical-based solvents like butane after freezing the plant before processing it.

Each of these types of cannabis concentrates can produce different types of textures:

  • Diamonds

  • Batter (also sometimes called Badder) or butter/budder

  • Shatter

  • Sugar

One other type of cannabis extract is called ice water hash, also sometimes called bubble hash. This is created by separating the trichomes (tiny little resin-filled balls on the plant that contain active compounds and terpenes – the stuff that makes it good!) from the plant and plant material, leaving only the trichomes.
